Motorcycling tips for the UAE: #2

There are observable behavior patterns that can be linked to the drivers of several specific types of vehicle in the UAE, Lexus drivers, Mini-bus drivers, Taxi Drivers, SUV's in general, but the best defined and most important one to keep in mind is;
Tip Number 2: Watch the Land Cruiser
Toyota Land Cruiser drivers are almost without exception, dangerously oblivious to the traffic around them, the road conditions, speed limits and the weather. If you see a vehicle doing 160kph in thick fog, the odds are it's a Land Cruiser. Someone cutting across four busy lanes to get to an exit slip road? probably a Land Cruiser. Reversing back up the hard shoulder? Going off-road to cut a corner? And who's that flashing their headlights at you?... When I rode to Oman last week the only time I got flashed in about 400Km of single and two lane roads, it was a Land Cruiser with Dubai plates.

Land Cruiser drivers very rarely signal and even less frequently signal honestly or correctly so a good tip is to keep an eye on the front wheels as this will give you a hint as to the driver's intention much quicker than watching the body of the car.
You can usually rely on a standard Land Cruiser to do something stupid but there are additional warning signs to look out for, tinted windows are a bad omen, as are gold badges (egotistical) and gold badges on a gold Land Cruiser with dark tinted windows and a DVD player in the back clearly spells DANGER. Don't be surprised to see a DVD player in the front too.
